Una Casa Nueva

Throughout the past few days Lydia and I´s situation has become progressively better. On Thursday we went down to visit the local neighbor, Gueillmo, to help out with some work on his farm. He has an incredible wife named Luz and four children. They were incredibly welcoming to all of us and invited us to eat lunch with them. They speak very little english, but they are very patient in helping us learn spanish. We helped mix compost, hacked some weeds with machetes, and threw cow manure around the roots of some trees. Their whole farm is completely organic and self-sustaining. They are not a part of the WWOOF organization, but they have had many WWOOFers stay with them due to the situations that have arisen at the farm we are currently staying at. Gueillmo and Luz took us down to one of their fields where they have a sugar cane processing machine. They would stick a piece of sugar cane into the machine and collect the juice straight from the sugar cane. We decided that it was the Costa Rican version of koolaid. It was probably one of the most intense sweet drinks I´ve ever tasted. Sweet tea has nothing on this stuff.

It was so refreshing to be at a real organic farm with a Tican family. They have a little six year old girl named Daniella who is simply amazing. She took Lydia and I to her little playhouse and made us some "cafe con leche" and then proceeded to give us both manicures. Lydia and I now both have purple sparkly fingernails.

Their house and land is also incredibly scenic. They have a turquoise house that is surrounded by magenta tropical flowers with a stream right down the side of their yard. Also, one of their pigs just recently birthed a litter of piglets who run all about the farm making little grunt noises everywhere they go.

Before we left their farm Luz asked Lydia and I if we would like to live with them for our remaining time here. Lydia and I really had no hesitation in accepting this offer. We are planning on moving down there tomorrow sometime in the afternoon. I think that we are both ready to actually learn something and share in the living experience of this beautiful Tican family. It is such a relief to finally feel some type of security in people that are really looking out for us.

Another WWOOFer showed up on Thursday. Lydia and I met him on the road as we were walking back from Guiellmo´s. His name is Jonathan and he is a cognitive science/philosophy from Florida. As we walked back to the farm we had to explain to him everything that had been going on throughout our whole experience. I felt pretty horrible for spilling that all out on him, but I suppose that it is better to know sooner than later. Anyway, we´ve been trying to help him feel as comfortable as we can. As Lydia and I know all too well, the first few days on the farm can be pretty stressful.

That is all the news that we have for now. I finally was able to upload some pictures. They are from my smaller camera that has rolled down a mountain and been dropped numerous times, but they are decent enough to post.

Oh Angie,

How my heart aches for the beauty of the place you are in right now! And the incredible adventures you are experiencing! Have I said I'm a wee bit jealous?;) I am thrilled you guys have been provided with a new place to live and work (being slaves--not so fun:) Soak it up my friend...soak it up and don't forget--God bless America! (I am having increasing difficulty saying this with conviction anymore Ang, might need to find a new bonding phrase...:) Peace friend.

Hey Angie!

This experience sounds totally life changing and really exciting! I think it's awesome that you get to this and I hope you continue to learn and grow while you stay there and help people out.

Can't wait to read more about your experiences.

(hope that wasn't too cheesy for you)
